How much mobile data do you need?

Running out of 4G data is annoying, especially when you’re out and about. Eating out just isn’t the same if you can’t post a picture on Instagram for the world to see. Waiting for your monthly allowance to renew always seems like the longest time too. That’s why making sure your phone contract gives you enough mobile data is a pretty big deal, so you can do all the things you love online without a care in the world. But don’t worry. We’re here to help. Use our guide below to learn how much mobile data you need.

The commuter

If you commute to work every day, then you’re likely to use your data for entertainment, as a way to escape. How much data you need will depend on what you do to counteract this boredom. If you scroll through social media, then you’ll use less data than someone who chooses to watch TV, so bear this in mind.

You need data for your sanity. We’d suggest either 10GB or 15GB.

The showaholic

With catch-up TV so easily accessible across all devices, staying up-to-date with our favourite series has never been easier. As a showaholic, you literally swallow mobile data up by the bucketload. Watching just four hours of Netflix on your phone will set you back 1GB of data.

To be on the safe side, we’d recommend 20GB or more for you.

The music obsessed

No matter what your soundtrack of choice is, if you listen to a lot of music throughout the day, then you could use over 1GB per week. And that’s without a trip to Instagram or Twitter.

Go for a plan with 6GB, so you can listen to music and check out social media if you want to.

The old-school caller

If sending a message on WhatsApp is like your kryptonite and you prefer to stay in touch with your loved ones with a good old fashioned phone call, then you won’t need much data. The good news is that most phone contracts provide unlimited minutes, so you’re more than covered.

A low-data contract is perfect for you. Opt for 500MB or 1GB if you also want the option of online browsing.

The multitasker

Flicking between Instagram, YouTube, Apple Music and Netflix is your specialty. Your mobile-using habits varies, which means your data usage will too.

3GB should be fine, but if you want the freedom to stream more videos, then we’d suggest 6GB or more.

With the right plan, you should never run out of data. Regularly checking on your allowance is a great way to stay on top of things. And remember, you can always get in touch with your provider to increase your data usage. If you’re an O2 customer, controlling your data is simple. Our flexible tariffs, which are available on all Pay Monthly devices, allow you to move up and down as and when you want.
